The Architectural Design Process

Initial Conact

When you first contact us, we spend some time getting to know you and your project, as each project is as unique as the people who inhabit it. Once we know you and your project better, we can write a proposal that reflects all the appropriate services needed for your project.

House Call

When you first contact us, we spend some time getting to know you and your project, as each project is as unique as the people who inhabit it. Once we know you and your project better, we can write a proposal that reflects all the appropriate services needed for your project.

Proposal

We will generate a proposal of services and their costs tailored to your unique project and needs for your review. Once you have accepted the proposal, we will begin the design process outlined below.

PreDesign: Information Gathering Phase

We will review zoning and code requirements for your project. If it is a renovation we will measure the existing conditions generate the existing CAD file for the basis of our design. We will also collect further information from you regarding your needs, dreams, and preferences for your project.

The Design Process

Step 1: Schematic Design: Design Intent Determined

This is where we try out different design ideas based on the information we gathered in the PreDesign phase. Typically this involves 2-4 different schemes that are then combined into one scheme based on feedback from you. By the end of this phase we will have a drawing showing the basic design intent.

Step 2: Zoning Drawings

If a zoning review is required for your project this is where we would format and compile the schematic design drawings for presentation to your local zoning board. We would also produce any addition information/drawings required by your board.

Step 3: Design Development:  Design is refined and details of design are determined.

During this phase we refine the schematic design. The exact locations of fixtures, walls, windows, etc. is determined based on client feedback, design, and code requirements. Structural elements are chosen and sized, further refining the design. Interior elevations, sections and ceiling plans are drawn. Any built-in elements are designed. Material and fixture selections are made.

Step 4: Construction Drawings: Design details developed for constructability and systems coordination.

Here we make sure all systems and elements are fully coordinated and functional by drawing construction details. This involves many details depending on your project, but often includes things such as eave and foundation details, window and door details, and further information on interior elevations. Having complete construction documents gives the contractor instructions on how all the design, structural and system elements fit together, and what materials to use.

Step 5: Construction Administration: During construction problem solving

During construction problems can come up as unknown conditions are revealed. The designer then works with the contractor to develop a solution that stays true to the design vision of the client. This ensures continuity and quality of design during its execution. The designer also has the role of client advocate and conducts site visits to verify that the project is being built according to the drawings and specifications.
